Getting on “The Circuit”

This is a question that we often get asked and an area that we pay a fair amount of attention on during our courses. There is no “DS” answer to this but there are certain things that we can all do to make ourselves stand out in what is a very competitive market place, here are some examples:

  • consider getting a professionally done CV; www.cvspecifics.com come highly recommended by us!
  • ensure that your cover letter is tailored specifically to the position rather than a generic cover letter
  • DO NOT SEND EMAILS WRITTEN IN CAPITALS……..it looks like you are shouting!
  • do not write emails as you would a text message: r u takin n e body on? This sort of thing will get you a nil result!
  • ensure that your social networking does not embarrass you in anyway, it may prevent you getting a job and employers DO research this area!
  • continue on with your professional development throughout your career
  • ensure shoes are clean and polished
  • take your portfolio to interview
  • have a standard email address, nothing offensive or ‘funny’ as it is not!
  • answer the phone like a professional especially if you do not know the number – set a good impression from the off!
  • leave a personal answer phone message rather than your carrier one but again ensure it is sensible
  • if wearing a tie, ensure that the top button of your shirt is fastened

Ok, so this list is not exhaustive but it is a start and really they are all pretty basic things that should be done as a given. Do not make the mistake of thinking that if you look the part that that is enough…..it ‘may’ be for a while, it may not but sooner or later bad business etiquette will catch you out and may cost you dearly. Go the extra mile and get the best out of yourself!
